Ash Jumpsuit for Ruby

I missed posting this yesterday for KCW because my kids needed me, so I chose to stop sewing and hang out with the kiddos I was sewing for :).

This morning we woke up and went about our day.  I planned on doing this photo shoot and Ruby has been a little off the last 3 days.  Just coughing a bit and fussy but I chalked it up to teething.  After this photo shoot things escalated quickly and she ended up getting a fever and coughing worse and worse.  So mommy instinct told me to take her in and I’m so glad we did.  X-rays in the ridiculous pigg-o-stat showed she had pneumonia starting in her lungs.  The second time in 4 months!  Crazy.  I’m so thankful for modern medicine.  We gave her ibuprofen before the doctor office.  After a shot in her leg and picking up her prescription, by the time we made it home her fever had returned but was 104.1 this time.  Poor baby.  She has some more fever reducer in her, some antibiotics, and is sleeping peacefully.  And here I am at 1 in the morning writing this post.  Ha!  The things we do sometimes to have some time to ourselves.

She does NOT look or act like a baby who has pneumonia in these pictures!  I honestly could not believe how quickly things got bad.  Crazy.

Ok, but this jumpsuit.  ACK!  Isn’t it the most adorable jumpsuit?  I am so in love with it!  The fabric is again from l’oiseau fabrics (see THIS post for more of their amazing fabrics), and I just love it so much!   You can find this star poplin HERE.

The pattern is from Willow & Co. Patterns and this is the Ash Jumpsuit by petit a petit and family.

This was such a fun sew.  Between the fabric being awesome to sew with and the wonderful pattern instructions, I really enjoyed sewing this.  Every time I would sew a step, I would have to turn it right side out and admire how cute it was coming together.

I could not WAIT to get it on her the next morning!  And all my kids were sure to totally dote on her and tell her how adorable she looked.

Ruby would not sit for long.  She was on the go the whole time.  That’s the thing about her—she loves being outside so much that even though she was fussy that morning and then afterwards, she still was so happy to be outside exploring while we took pictures.

I had to unpick the waistband because I accidentally read the wrong size and so I was 3” too short on my elastic through the waist.  It’s a good thing I did that, as tempting as it was to not add that 10 minutes of sewing time, because she might not have fit otherwise.

Ruby turned one the beginning of June, but she is small for her age (due to her heart, for those of you new here), and so I stuck with the size 6-12 months.

I see many more of these jumpsuits in her future, and now Bailey wants one too so I might be pretty happy to oblige!  I love it so much!

ASH JUMPSUIT REVIEW

Pattern Pieces, Instructions, and Skill Level
The pattern printed out fine with no problems.  The instructions were very clear and I didn’t get too confused during the process.  You do need to read carefully with the neck binding and arm binding.  It is a little tricky but totally doable once it makes sense.

Sizing/Fit
I made Ruby the size 6-12 months and it fits her perfectly.

Modifications to Pattern
I stuck with the pattern as is.

Fabric
THIS star poplin from l’oiseau fabrics.   Love it!

How Long it Took to Sew
These numbers I can never be sure if they are accurate, but my guess is from start to finish, including cutting, it probably took about an hour and half.

Things I Might Change Next Time
I might stitch a couple places on the side seams to hold the elastic in place.  The only thing I notice is that most of the bunching around the neckline takes away from the gathering of the back bodice.  So maybe holding some of the elastic in place and sewing so it stays more evenly gathered.

Wearability
Ruby was fine in it.  Didn’t seem to bother her at all :). Poplin is a bit thin for crawling babies, so it might be wise to use a more durable fabric for babies on their hands and knees a bunch.

Overall Impression
Love it love it love it!  So much.  Wonderful pattern with great instructions, and the best outcome.  One of my favorite sewing projects for my kids.
