Blue Dress

05/26/2010 By Christie

Those posts on all the decades were fun, but I felt before I delve into it next week that I would complete a dress I had planned on finishing for the Kids Clothes Week on Elsie Marley (but never did).  DSCF9028 - Copy

I used Dana’s tutorial from MADE for the Shirt Dress.  I liked it so much that I already have a dress shirt ready to cut up from the thrift store.  DSCF9067 - Copy

I didn’t use a shirt, but just cut out some favorite fabric I had.  I made the waist band a little higher.  The tutorial is easy to understand and it turned out so cute!  I’ve seen those elastic sleeve/neck combined types of shirts and dresses all over and wanted to figure out how to make one.  I didn’t have to figure it out, because Dana’s tutorial showed me how to do just what I was hoping to try and do!  What’s awesome is that you can pretty much really mess up the casing (oh how I wish I had a serger!) but the elastic makes it all magically better:). I’m just going to show you how I did the doily detail real quick.  Cut each band part at least 12” longer than what Dana has on her tutorial.  Sew one side of straps together, and then wrap it around the dress like this.

You can leave it open to thread elastic through.  I didn’t use elastic since I made her dress more narrow. DSCF8973

At this point you can just tie it in a knot, even out the ends of the sash by cutting, tucking in the ends, and sewing.  I used a fabric button maker for the button.

Or, you can kind of fold the ends together like this.  I sewed my ties (straps, whatever you want to call them) in half so they were thinner.  I sewed them down to the skirt as well, because I didn’t like how they were flopping around.  I should have done it on this step, but I didn’t, so that’s why you don’t see them sewed in half in the following pictures.  But it will be easier if you do it now!  DSCF8975

Pin doily on top.  Sew around outer edge of doily.  DSCF8981

Then I sewed on my fabric button.DSCF8983

I used a white Ikea sheet to make the ruffle.  It was really nice because I just used the finished edge of the sheet along the bottom.  DSCF8985
So pretty!!!  Thanks, Dana, for the great tutorial!  I’m excited to make more dresses now that I know how to make this style of neckline!

AND I love my new favorite shoes.  Got them at payless, and even better, I got B’s sandals 1/2 off with their BOGO sale, so 2 pair of shoes for $18.00!  Yay!

Super cute dress you made for your daughter. And your flats are super cute too! I think Disney has the exact same pair. After I saw them on her, I went to Payless the next day, but they didn’t have any in my size, and I’m a 7! I also live in San Francisco too! Don’t you just love BOGO sales?! :)

    P.S.
On the bottom of the Payless receipt there might be a $2 coupon on yours, and I don’t know if your Payless lets you do this, but mine let me use the $2 off on top of the BOGO =]
