It’s funny how there have been posts about this lately, all while I have been in the process of cleaning out my house. It’s great motivation.
We are hoping to get approved for a loan to build a home in the next year (haven’t heard back though, so we’ll see–I hear it’s hard right now). So, I just wanted to get started on cleaning up our home to sell as I feel like we just have a ton of STUFF. It could take a while to get this place organized and de-junked.
One of the things I am doing right now is cleaning out my fabric pile. I’ve been given boxes and bags of fabric. A lot of it dates back to the 60’s. Plus, I just might have a slight addiction to fabric, which aids in me purchasing fabric that I have no idea what to use it for. I have a TON. And most of it I really have no plans for!
I am putting that to a stop. Well, not necessarily buying fabric for something, but I am going to try my best to purchase fabric only when I have a project in mind–and only when I am ready to do it. If you are like me, you always have a lot of projects going on in your head…but finding the time to do them is a whole different story!
I had no idea until I put these pictures on my computer that my 5 year old had taken them. What’s amusing—besides that I look like a dork in them, is the fabric on my lap! Ha ha ha! Sabra and I had a good laugh about this particular fabric. I was thinking of offering it for free besides shipping, but honestly, I think it is going to the thrift store.
I’m in the process of taking pictures and measuring a lot of my fabric to SELL:). Yee-haw. It’s gonna be great. So stay tuned. Here is the pile of fabric I’m selling. Anyone just want to buy the whole thing right now and make it easy on me ;) ?
Oh yes, I have a question for you! How do you organize your scraps of fabric? I hate to waste it when you can use it on cards, rolled flowers, etc. But I hate looking in the box because it just seems like a big mess! Any tips???
A horrible picture of me indeed, but I’m STILL contemplating how someone thought the combination of those colors would work on that fabric. I look impressed…or like I’m falling asleep.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!
Rachelle
I’ll buy it all off ya, but it depends on how much you’re asking for the whole lot.

Oh my I can’t wait to see the prices- I really like that retro blue daisy one! I have my fabric aranged by type- so this systme will not work if you are aquilter only- then I have all cottons stacked on a bookshelf- eventually I want to get it sorted by color
here is a great picture blog that inspires me.

I read somewhere to use one of those shoe organizers that hang on a door and have all clear plastic pockets and store them by color. I don’t have a craft “room” more like a craft corner with additional fabric storage stuffed wherever I can fit it but IF I had somewhere to hang it I think this is what I would do.

organizing fabric–i cut the scrap into the largest square I can and I have clear boxes set up for the various sizes…up to 1/2 yard. Anything larger gets folded uniformly and goes on shelves. All projects in process are in zip bags. Having squares just keeps things so much neater. Anything less than 2 inches, I typically throw out.

I’m happy to help you de-stock for a good cause. Let me know the total yardage, how much you want and an estimated shipping cost to MD. I may pick out some and the rest will go to a charity that teaches sewing for mothers in distress who need an second income or a stay at home job. I already donated my old sewing machine and a bunch of fabrics

I have a giant box-o-scraps. It’s kind of a hassle, but then it can be a treasure hunt digging through everything for something cute to use!

AH! I’ll take it!! Or some of it…I LOVE the 60’s fabrics…especially that paisley…and yes, like you I have TONS of fabric with so many ideas in mind, some just because. I’ll be watching your blog closely unless you’d like to email what you want to send me :)

I’ll buy it all if the price is right too!

nice! looks like you have some takers. :) Love the pics your son took, those are always fun. I just recently got rid of a lot of fabric, gave it away to friends, sent some to goodwill. Also separated my scraps into three mesh type bins from the dollar spot at target, one for warm colors, one for cool colors and one for solids, etc. Hope it helps to not get so messy!

OK, I have to say…all I was thinking as I read this post was “Good gravy she looks thinl!” Beautiful people like you shouldn’t post photos of yourselves, it only makes the rest of us feel bad! :o) j/p! But good for you for letting some stash go! That takes discipline!! :o)

LOL at Disney, you ARE very photogenic. I have a huge stash problem too, but wouldn’t look half as good contemplating it. We are actually in the process of downsizing because I want to move out of this monstrosity of a house one day and can’t take it all with us. I have decided it is going to take some baby steps to get going. My first impulse was to want to offer to buy all your fabrics. Ummm, that is not exactly going in the right direction. I know you will find a good home for all those lovely fabrics though.

I can commiserate with you – we are selling our house right now and have had to declutter a lot! But fabric?? No way, baby!
As for scraps, I just bought some great little baskets and folded my scraps – organized by color, of course, for ease of finding what I need!

Organizing Scraps: I fold them into the best rectangle I can (folding inward the selvages of the fabric scrap) then I roll it up and tie a piece of twine around it to keep it from unrolling. Once all my scraps of fabric are rolled, I organize them in a drawer depending on their length (size of rectangle).

I’d totally be interested in buying some scraps from you!! Do you have anything in yellows, greens, pinks??
Let me know! I’ll buy it!!

I actually did this last year and got rid of all the fabric I had cause I didn’t think I would be sewing for years as I was planning to go to Uni and even sold my sewing machine. I have since decided against going to Uni due to 5 kids and it would take me away from them too much. So I am now back in the sewing mode. Can’t wait to start collecting material again. Love all the stuff you are getting rid. Looks like you have lots of takers and that you have a young photographer on your hands.

Hey…what’s that John Deere fabric? ;-) I’m about to finish decorating my boys’ room with JD. Oh, and when you find out what to do with all your fabric scraps, PLEASE blog. ;-)

I am coming on this post was too late, this time last year I would have certainly offered to buy the lot o fabric off you too. I, too, have a fabric addiction, but I only get a portion of my laundry room for my sewing/yarn addictions and I don’t have any organization advice… mine is all in boxes, bags or totes.
I have made strip/string pieced quilt tops with some of my scraps but honestly I almost cry every time I toss some out. I admit, I am a fabric pack rat. :)
