1. I’ve been jogging 3 days a week for the past month and a half and have finally worked up to 3.2 miles. I’m getting better and better at it. I know some people run much further distances than that, but for me this has been a HUGE accomplishment! I have never in my entire life jogged that far. I’m training for the Dirty Dash with friends, and a 5k with my siblings, both in June. I’m also walking tomorrow in the Race for the Cure with my Mom and step-dad Karl. My step-dad’s first wife passed away from breast cancer. This race is quite the amazing event! You can click HERE to donate in her memory (all proceeds going to sponsor research for the cure!)
2. Speaking of jogging…I get terrible side aches and my chest has a burning knot in the middle every time. and sometimes my throat feels like it’s closed up and I can’t swallow! Basically I feel like I’m gonna die. Does anyone else have this hard of a time jogging? Because wow, it’s really discouraging some days when I jog and I can only hope that it will get better with time. I’ve read a lot on breathing techniques and I take allergy pills…any other ideas on what might help? My brother forwarded me THIS video and I loved it. Inspiring and also explained some things I’ve always wondered about with running, though I have no desire to ever run a full marathon!
3. My kids only have 2 weeks left of school and I am giddy with excitement for them to be home!!! Summer break is going to be busy, but so much fun! I need to start deciding on some type of schedule for them, along with lots of fun outings. Oh my goodness, how I love summer time!
4. Have you heard what Cheri (I Am Momma) is starting on her blog? Most likely you have, but if not, it’s called For the Love and sounds like it will be really awesome. It’s for charity, and there are tutorials and auctions involved. Really cool idea.
5. If you haven’t been following Delia’s Mammarazzi series (on Delia Creates), you need to! It’s so full of wonderful photography info! I still love photography and I’m trying to improve all the time. I wish I could devote more time, but this series has already helped me understand things better.

Have you tried interval training? My lungs would often burn when I tried to run which was sooo demotivating. I tried the couch to 5k training program and training in intervals, working up to a 5k really helped.

Hey, love your blog and have been reading along for ages. I am seriously not one for advice off the cuff, but felt the need to say don’t over schedulize your kids, go with the flow a bit and just relax and enjoy. As they get older (teenage etc.) you really will miss the easy fun days!

Back off a little if you have a side ache…you’re not getting enough air. That coupled with the closed off feeling makes me wonder if you’re not pushing yourself way too hard. I used to get this, but then realized I was really anxious about running and would convince myself I was dying and couldn’t breathe. I started interval training and slowing down and I have no problems and I can run 5 miles in a row…I just had to work up to it! Don’t push yourself so hard…you’re doing great!

could it be that you have a touch of asthma? I have really bad allergies and they set off my asthma bad. I never had allergies or asthma that I was aware of until 3 years ago. BAM. right before I turned 30. The weirdest things cause my throat to feel small. The allergies are bad right now too. Maybe when you jog you are breathing them in more because you are breathing harder?

I couldn’t agree more on the scheduling, Lisa. When I say schedule I just mean library days , swimming, reading time, etc …just good things so they don’t watch tv all day. :) Thanks for the reminder to relax and enjoy, as that is something I don’t always do!

Jogging is great!
and as you keep it up you will continue getting better!
health above all!
Lisa
Oh that sounds like fun, library days and swimming etc. And I totally agree with the TV thing too, it’s surprising sometimes when you don’t keep an eye on it and all of a sudden the hours in front of the TV have added up! I know that I am guilty of that one myself :) Take care.

When I first started jogging the same thing happened to me. I heard about this way of training that really helped me where you run as fast as you can for 1 minute and then slow down for 1 minute, slowly working your way up to longer times. It really helped me with that burning and made me a faster runner!
Hope this helps and have a great time running!
Delia
Thank you for the shout out Christie! You are awesome. You are a fabulous mom. I need to schedule good things for my kids to do too. We might go comatose in front of the TV if I don’t! :)
Good luck with the running. I am not a runner. I think you’re amazing!

There’s something called exercise induced asthma. Is it possible you’ve developed this? I reckon it could be further irritated by allergies, but I’m not a medical professional so I can’t say for sure.
