First off, I just want to thank everyone for their sweet comments and concerns for my sister and her family. I have very kind readers–which is really a huge part of why I love to blog. I get to hear thoughts of wonderful people all around the world. Also, I wanted to state that I hope the post came across the way I intended it to—that I am really thankful for great people and great health care despite our trials. And I know that what I have gone through personally does not compare to some of the hard things that some of you have gone through. Like I was saying, I think people are amazing that they can get through some of the things they do! Anyways, thank you for being great!__________________________________________________________________________________
My family is blessed to get along great with Sabra’s family. Our husbands even get along and hang out (on their own!) so it makes for a pretty perfect match. Well, Sabra’s son had an awesome birthday party this week. The theme? Mad Scientist. What a cool theme! And perfect for her adorable son.
So what did we give the birthday boy?
His own “Mad Scientist Experiments” book, complete with 17 different science experiments that I found online (sources listed below).
I made a very simple book cover out of a t-shirt we weren’t going to keep. I used a photo album that holds 4 x 6 photos. If you don’t know where to start for a book cover, I found a tutorial on Prudent Baby here.
For the cover letters, I used my Christmas present from the hubs to cut out the letters and the ink splat from freezer paper. I downloaded the ink splat from the Silhouette website. (I am loving my Silhouette—cutting the freezer paper for stencils has been awesome!)
Along with the book, we gave him some of the supplies asked for in the experiments.
You can click here for the printable file of the experiments, and here for the “mad scientist observation” cards. Each experiment and observation card measures 4 x 6 so you can fit them into a photo album. **I cannot guarantee that all the experiments will work, since I just copied and pasted the experiments.**
More experiments can be added by the Mad Scientist if there are empty slots left in the photo album.

On the awesome invites to the party, Sabra said to come with your best mad scientist hair. They left like this, insisting to wear their church shirts for lab coats:
And came home sporting these incredibly cool glasses:
My kids had a blast! Thanks Sabra!
…psst! Sabra has full details on her blog here!

What a great idea.

that gift was immediately seized by my sisters who passed it around and couldn’t get over how awesome and PERFECT it was! K has been begging to do the experiments, and once this crazy week of insane lunacy is over, I think we will do at least one a week. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that you left areas for his observations. Thank you for such a thoughtful, fun gift, Christie, and for the shout out.

I absolutely love this! What a wonderful and thoughtful gift, and such a great theme for a party. Your boys look like they had a BLAST!

My partner is a scientist and we’re dying to do something mad-science themed for my nephew, who’s currently 4. What would you say is a good age for this gift? Think I could make it for his 5th birthday?
Christie @ A Lemon Squeezy Home
Jac, I think 5 is a great age for this–you’ll just have to be more involved than if he were older…but my 5 year old loves science experiments!
Holly
This is PERFECT timing! We’re going to a birthday party soon for a little girl who loves a book about a “mad scientist” so I can’t wait to make this for her!

What a fantastic idea! Coming from a family where both myself & my husband have PhD’s we really love this stuff. Don’t forget to check out http://www.stevespanglerscience.com for even more fantastic science ideas.

Thank you for assembling these great experiments! I downloaded them and I will make a book for my 6 year old grandson whose favorite subject is science. He loves to read, too, and these are things we’ll do together this summer when he comes to visit Grandma! I think “Science Camp” at Grandma and Grandpa’s house is a winner of an idea! It beats the outrageous expense of taking him to Disney World again, too.

WOW! what an awesome gift here, love these science experiments also!
