Heart Lovie Tutorial

These heart lovies are SO simple to sew.  These are small, measuring about 19″ wide and 21″ long, depending on how large you cut your heart.  They are meant for the child to just snuggle with, without having a bunch of extra fabric.  The V of the heart (the top of the heart) actually lets their cute little faces stick out perfectly, while the rest of the heart will cover the shoulders and chest if needed.  You could also add ribbon tags around the edges to make it more stimulating for a little baby who likes to grab tags :).  Anyways, they are cute, and easy, and would be a great gift.

–You will need 3/4 yard of flannel and 3/4 yard of some cuddly soft fabric.  **You will be able to make two hearts out of 3/4 yard of each fabric.

I liked the fox fabric as far as the thickness, but the airplane is also so super soft and I loved the boy print.  It seems there are a lot of ideas for gifts for baby girls, and I’m trying to find more that would work for boys as well.  So this isn’t just fleece fabric, it’s better than fleece so it should stay fairly soft after many washings.  Flannel doesn’t stay quite as soft sometimes unfortunately (depending on quality).  But I do think that this fabric used on the other side will stay softer than a normal fleece would.

My flannel was already folded in half once from how it was folded in the store on the bolt, so I took that and folded it in half once more so I would be cutting out two hearts at once.

I did not cut two hearts at once from the softer fabric, just because it shifts more easily.  So I folded it in half once and cut out half the heart.

Now place right sides together. Pin.

Make sure to leave about a 4″ opening so you can turn the fabric right side out.

Start sewing about a 1/4″ away from the side (I always just follow the edge of my presser foot).  Backstitch at the beginning and then end about 4″ from where you started, also backstitching.

Clip the “v” of the top of the heart, along with the curves and the bottom point of the heart (next three pictures).

Turn right side out through the 4″ hole you left.  Tuck in the edges of the opening and pin.

Roll the fabric so that the edges get pulled out and you have the seam as close to the outer edges as you can.  Press.  Pin all around the heart.

Now topstitch close to the edge, making sure to backstitch at the start and finish, as well as lengthen your stitch to about 3.0 or 3.5.  Turn and pivot at the points on the heart.

And that is all!  Very easy, right?
