I belong to a facebook group that is for parents of heart babies. The people on there are absolutely amazing, and they have been an amazing support to me and I’m so thankful for it. Last week this group had a birthday party to celebrate 4 years, and they made it into a Halloween party. We didn’t have any costumes that fit Ruby, so I started to brainstorm. Those who are born with a CHD and have to endure surgeries are often called Heart Warriors.
I thought it was fitting for Ruby, and for the occasion.
And believe it or not, but the lil’ papoose moccasins and the ottobre villiko were already on my list of things to make, both in the fabrics of choice before planning this outfit. Awesome how that worked out, right? They couldn’t have been more perfect for her costume!
I made the heart out of felt and sewed on a strap that wraps around her belly and attaches with velcro in the back. So easy.
The little arrow is a pencil covered with black pleather—I cut out the shapes and hot glued them on.
Her feather headpiece uses feathers from Joann, hot glued to the front of some black wide elastic (so the feathers aren’t touching her head and uncomfortable). I hot glued another piece of the elastic onto the front of the feathers to hide the ends. I made it pretty loose so it doesn’t bother her at all.
I have to say, it’s pretty. stinking. cute. :)
I’ll show you my other kids’ Halloween costumes later this week—they opted for store-bought this year but they all look so great!

This is too cute! I have to tell you that every single time we see a picture or video of Ruby on instagram, Jonathon and I just sit and talk about how adorable she is! She seems like such a special baby. :) Anyway, I just couldn’t NOT comment on this because it is so precious!

What a great costume! I love it, and it goes perfectly with everything you’ve made her lately. Somehow I missed the moccasins post. They are adorable! Love them. Thanks for sharing. I know how busy you must be, so thanks for taking time to post!

Such a cute costume. I hope you save the costume. Just an idea: In the future, on the anniversary of her heart surgery you can have her pose with the heart from her costume and snap another photo.
I just recently ran across your blog and I don’t know you at all but I plan on sending up a few prayers for Ruby when her surgery time nears.
