As a heart mom, I can vouch for the many many MANY times you are driving to and from doctors appointments. Those who have children with extended stays in the hospital likely make the trek to the hospital and home multiple times per day. I thought it would be fun to have a heart key fob be one of the gift ideas for heart parents. I’m not sure guys would like but I think heart moms would appreciate it. They are really quite simple to make.
All you need is the key fob hardware set (available at Joann), some pliers, an iron, a 1.5″ x 10″ strip of fabric (preferably with hearts!), and a 10″ strip of belting. My belting is 1″ wide–you can get wider belting and then just adjust the fabric width as well as well as getting a larger key fob set. Also, my pliers look really gross so that’s why you only see them peeking in at the side of the photo :).
First take your strip of fabric and fold and iron either side down just barely over 1/4″. This way you can see the belting contrast on the sides, once complete.
Place the fabric on top of the belting, with right side of fabric facing you. Make sure the ironed edges are tucked under the fabric. Sew close to the edge of the fabric down one side. I lengthened my stitch on this to a 3.
Now repeat with other side.
Now open your key fob and sandwich the fabric inside, making sure the edges of the belting are centered and aren’t sticking out the sides.
Place something over the key fob metal so you don’t scratch it with your pliers.
Now simply squeeze the hardware tight so it closes on the fabric and secures the fabric and belting.
Slide the ring onto the hardware and that’s it!
