Ruffled Vase Tutorial

03/29/2010 By Christie

Don’t you just love spring time? I completely love it. Everything about spring makes me happy. The colors, the flowers, the excitement of playing outdoors after being inside for way too long. I love it!

Most of this spring layout is self-explanatory. I’ll just give you a few steps on how I made the above display.
*For the table runner, I sewed the ruffles on the top layer before sewing the underneath fabric to the top fabric. I topstitched around the whole thing, but not on top of the ruffles. So I backstitched close to the ruffles.

*For the ruffled vase. First measure around your vase.

Then cut some strips twice that amount, (so these are 22″ x 3″).

Iron them in half.

Sew around each edge except for one of the short sides.

Turn right side out. Tuck in the end you didn’t sew, iron, and stitch closed.

Use a basting stitch along one of the sides and pull on one of the threads to ruffle the strip.

Place a ruffle around the vase, and see where it will need to be sewn. Make it tight enough so that it doesn’t slide down the vase. But don’t pull too tightly and break the basting stitch.

Sew together to make a ruffled circle.

Make sure to backstitch over the basting stitch a few times so that it doesn’t come undone when you clip the extra threads.

Slide over the vase and repeat with other strips.

You can either leave all the ruffles on…

Or, if you want to make it more simple, then just leave one or two on. DSCF8119
Happy Spring!

It turned out so cute. And it kind of reminds me of a flamanco skirt or something. Just fun and pretty.

That’s adorable! Now I just have to persuade the boyfriend to buy me a vase next time he gets me flowers – we’ve got them in jugs at the moment!
