Slippers for Little Miss B: Sandi Henderson Pattern

04/04/2011 By Christie

DSCF5196

I learned something about myself when sewing these shoes:  I do not like making teeny shoes.  They are sure cute to look at, but man, I just had a heck of a time making them!DSCF5185

I used Sandi Henderson’s pattern in her book Sewing Bits and Pieces.  You’ll see that her shoes have a cute little ruffle on them.  I love the ruffles and tried them out, but they didn’t work for various reasons (one being that the book tells you to cut a piece that won’t fit around the entire shoe as pictured once gathered, so I re-cut them longer and then it just looked funky once sewn on, which would be my fault).  DSCF5215

B wears a size 7 so I made a size 8, but they didn’t fit—they were too small.  So if making this pattern, cut the fabric for the ruffle bigger, and size UP at least 2 sizes.  I ended up making her a 10, but they are a little big on her. DSCF5188

B was really eager to try on her new slippers once they were finished.  She kept taking pieces of the shoes and “wearing” them while I was sewing.  DSCF5194

I had bought a remnant years ago of the bumpy grip fabric for pj’s that I was finally able to use.  And since she’ll just be wearing these in the house, I didn’t mind the bottoms of the slippers being white.DSCF5187

I love that she can put them on all by herself and…DSCF5189

…just sit back and relax.  Ahhh…the life of a carefree two year old.  Who most certainly does not think her life is carefree:).  DSCF5197

Those are way cute Christie! I can see myself getting frustrated with the ruffle :).

They turned out sooooo cute! I’m sorry they gave you such grief. If you get an inkling to make some again, I can help you find an easy pattern. I love making tiny shoes!
    My girls love them, too.

Super duper cute! I have that same fabric and haven’t used it yet but I like what you did with it here.

Hi Christie! These are so cute, but I’ve made little baby slippers before and I know they are a pain. I actually own this book and have never made anything out of it. Maybe I will try this . . .Are you ready for market?

I made those last fall for my girl. Same problem with the ruffle. They turned fairly cute, but she’s never worn them :( I, too, discovered that small shoe sewing is not fun.

oh man, I’m glad I’m not the only one that hates making tiny shoes. I always see adorable ones like yours that make me want to try, and then halfway in I inevitably want to stick my thread clippers in my eye. These are really cute though.

SO super cute! But after watching you make them, I don’t think I’ll be trying them anytime soon. But then again, SO CUTE!! So maybe one day.

These are so cute! I think the ruffled elastic band is more than enough ruffle for this shoe.

The non-skid bottoms are a nice touch. I wish I used some of that for my boy’s slippers because they have already worn through the bottoms!

These are adorable. I purchased a book with a slipper pattern but have not attempted it yet. You may have had a little frustration but they turned out really cute.
