Three Memory Quilts

One of my best friends lost her amazing Dad in January, due to complications from leukemia.

A few months after his passing, I asked my friend if she was interested in using any of his shirts to make a quilt with. She said she would love that, and soon one quilt turned into three–one for my friend, her sister, and her mom.

He worked at Delta Airlines and so we were able to use his shirts that he wore to work.

I didn’t have a pattern for these, so they aren’t perfect. She had found a picture online that she liked and try as we may, neither of us could ever find the quilt again so I can’t even give credit to the original quilt she sent. The maroon fabric is all from his shirts, and my friend picked out the gray fabrics and backing. I also used Melanie’s tutorial HERE for the herringbone quilts on Crafty Cupboard. I did have them quilted this time by Sew Shabby Quilting, rather than attempting it myself. She does beautiful work! Both for time as well as not really having a good idea for quilting them with the white sashing between the rows.

(The coloring is off a little bit on some of these and makes the maroon a little more purple).

The quilts measure 58″ x 68″. The patterned fabric is 4″ wide and the white herringbone shapes are 3″ wide. The sashing is also 4″ wide. Took a little work to make them look like continuous zig zags and I learned a few good quiting tips along the way. For instance, the sashing was making the quilt all wavy so it didn’t lay flat. When I learned to cut the sashing the EXACT length I needed, and started pinning from the middle out, then it worked perfectly. One major regret I have is not clipping the triangle tips! It bothers me a whole lot because you can see them through the white. You can be sure I won’t make that mistake on another quilt but I was super bummed about it. Thankfully you can’t see them in most lighting.

I don’t really have much else to say about them other than I love my friend dearly!
