Today is our Ten Year Anniversary! Wow, how time flies. I sure snagged a great guy. He’s kind, funny, a great Dad, and a hard worker. When I had the nasty stomach flu a couple weeks ago, he totally held down the fort, and it was even clean when I got better! Listening to the kids have so much fun with him was heart-warming. Plus he took such great care of me during those couple of days.
We will be celebrating simply tonight, because before the year is up, we will be heading to Kona—our first time to Hawaii (and I seriously thought we would never go)! It wasn’t really planned for our anniversary, it just so happened that my mom and step-dad invited us to go with them this year, so it ends up being quite inexpensive for us to go along. Our kids will not be coming with us (oh, how I’ll miss them but they’ll be in good hands). So we’re definitely counting that as our anniversary celebration, my birthday celebration, and Christmas this year.
*My question to any of you who have been to Kona, let us know some must-see places, great places to eat, things to do, etc. etc. I’d love to know! We’re for sure snorkeling and visiting some waterfalls and a volcano, and relaxing on the beach is a must!*

Happy Anniversary!! We will be celebrating 6 years tomorrow. I’m excited you guys get to go to Hawaii (especially without the kids)! We’ve never been, but it sounds like a great way to celebrate 10 years!

We went to the Big Island a few years ago, and I LOVED it! We live on Oahu (the one with Honolulu and Waikiki), and it doesn’t at all compare with the Big Island. Anyways, we stayed on the Hilo side of the island–if you end up over there, you’ve GOT to go to Ken’s Pancake House. They have great food and reasonable prices. I think we ate at least one meal there each day, because they were sooo good. Definitely check out Black Sand Beach. If you’re rebellious, drive to the “southernmost point in the USA) even though it’s a dirt road and is listed on the rental car map as a no-no place. It’s absolutely gorgeous and so windy. The volcanoes are cool, but not as impressive as you might expect. The lava isn’t as gushing and bubbling as most think it will be. There are lots of really pretty scenic routes, if driving’s your thing; and of course there are lots of beaches. Hope you have a BLAST!

Oooh congrats on 10 years! I wish I had some advice for you about Kona, but unfortunately it’s still on my wish list of places to visit too :)! I’m sure you’ll have a fabulous time and I hope you’ll tell us all about it!

Happy TEN years!!! Crazy it’s been that long! Although for some reason I’ve actually been thinking it was going to be 11. Haha! I guess since I’ve been looking forward to #11 more because that’s when we’ll finally be able to take a good trip since I won’t be pregnant or nursing. So jealous you’re going to Hawaii! Hope it’s even better than you’re dreaming. :)

I just got back from my honeymoon in Kona and there are a few recommendations I can make:
1) you must must MUST do the night Manta Ray dive/snorkel. My hubby and I are licensed scuba divers so we dove, but if you don’t you can snorkel instead. Basically night-time in the ocean = creepy but you will completely forget about it when they turn on the flood lights and the mantas come swimming up to you (they’re giant, but totally plankon-feeders). I recommend the dive company Jack’s Locker
2)Many of the beaches on Big Island are hard to swim on because the lava rick coral ir really sharp. GREAT for snorkelling (especially next door to Outrigger) but crappy for wading out in bare feet. There is an amazing white sand beach 4 miles north of Kona airport though. It has no sign to indicate it and it’s a bit of a “local secret” apparently. Basically drive north on the highway from the airport and turn left at the road immediately across the road from the Veterans’ Cemetary entrance. Parking at the end.
3) if you’re looking for a very private, extremely beautiful, albeit fairly expensive place to stay near the volcano, there is a B&B called Volcano Rainforest Retreat run by a lovely couple who have basically built private cottages in the rainforest that you can rent. I highly recommend the Japanese Cottage, look in the guest book for Steffan and Julia from Halifax ;)
