Ice Cream Party: Celebrate Family Members’ Successes!

07/03/2012 By Christie

In case you missed me a couple weeks ago, here’s the post I wrote for Melanie’s blog at The Crafty Cupboard.

Today I want to share a simple way to help our kids feel great about themselves, and build family relationships.  A lady in my church was explaining how she and her husband would take their kids out for ice cream when they had done a good job on something, or accomplished something great.  She said it was happening so often they would always be going out for ice cream!  I really loved her idea and decided to do something similar.  With my husband being gone so often, I simplified it and just gathered supplies and made fun items so we could just have our own ice cream parties at home.

June 2012

I printed and framed THIS (free) adorable ice cream cone from Eat drink Chic.  The little ‘hooray’ sign was perfect for an ice cream party!

Cherries, caramel sauce, and strawberry syrup.

And of course chocolate sauce.  Mmmm.

The little clear goblets were from the Dollar Tree.  For the toppings, we have marshmallows, crunch bites, toffee chips, gummy bears, sprinkles, and m&m’s.  We probably won’t always have such a variety of toppings, but I figured this time we’d splurge a little.

I made a simple bunting with 2” strips of fabric tied onto a small rope.

The fun turquoise scoop and bowls were found at none other than Walmart.  Cheap and reusable.

Here are some ideas to get you started on the celebrations.

And there you have it! A fun and simple way to let your kids know how much you love and appreciate them. Don’t just stop at your kids though! Celebrate a promotion at work or other accomplishments of others in your family, as well! You could even invite over extended family members for their successes.

When my kids were still in school we would celebrate Fridays by stopping at the market on the way home from school. Each child was allowed to pick out one of those large candy bars that can be broken up into smaller pieces to share. When we got home we celebrated having made it through the week, mentioning our bumps and successes as we munched on the treat. When Daddy got home we shared with him, too.

I don’t have kids, but I love this idea. I like to think that one day I will, and these ideas will come back to me when I need them. Thanks!
