Large Triangle Quilt

Last August, one of my best friends (Sabra, from Sew a Straight Line) had a birthday. I had decided earlier in April 2015 that I would make a quilt for my closest friends. You can see them HERE, and HERE, and HERE.

I opted for another triangle quilt, obviously. I’ve made a bunch of them and since they are fairly quick (especially as a baby quilt). I have decided I need to branch out a bit. I’ve made other quilts of course, but triangle quilts are my go-to quilts. I just love the way they turn out. This one, with it being so large, seemed to give me a bit more problems. A lot of that had to do with some crappy gray fabric that totally shrinks and melts when pressing the quilt. Horrible. So it made for some wonky quilting lines on the quilt when quilting, which is super frustrating. But hopefully something that won’t be so noticeable once it’s washed and dried.

You can see the mistakes on the quilting better on this picture below. That stinky gray fabric. Ugh.

Then there’s the backing. I completely love the triangles, a lot. They weren’t planned originally, but I didn’t have my measurements for the quilt top when buying fabric for the quilt. I should have estimated better because I was super short on the floral backing. My Joann didn’t have anymore. So I had to get creative and piece the backing, and then I messed up again and had to add little strips on the sides and well, you get this bit of mess. Oh well. It happens. It’s just rather embarrassing when you are gifting it (mind you 9 months late!) and the mistakes are so obvious! Without enough backing, it also meant I had to cut closer around the edges to bind the quilt properly. So it cut off the tips of some of the triangles on the quilt top, and that’s just silly.

Alas, it’s finished and I do love the end result despite the hiccups and obvious mistakes. I’m sure this quilt would make any avid quilter cringe, but with each and every quilt I complete, I learn so much!
