Leather Hair Accessories DIY

04/29/2014 By Christie

DIY Leather Hair Accessories

So this is about the easiest DIY ever ;).  But I thought I’d share these simple ideas with you anyway since I think they are cute.

DIY Leather Hair Accessories

Really I’m just going to give you the basics on all of them other than the bow you see above.  Let your creativity shine here!  Because it’s leather and holds it’s shape really well, and doesn’t fray, you can cut whatever shapes you want to!

For the bow, start with a 2.5” x 3” rectangle of leather, about a 5” thin strip, the clip, and a hot glue gun.  * I bought THIS (affiliate link) pack of leather on Amazon.  I like it because you have plenty of scraps for jewelry or hair accessories and it is not expensive.  Read the reviews before making up your mind to purchase them.  Alternately, head to your thrift store and check out the jackets and purses there—you will get the most bang for your buck by doing that!

I like these clips because they don’t stick out from the wearer’s head.  For some reason bows and clips that stick out far from the head bother me :).

Fold in half and curve the corners, if desired.  I like it better with curved corners.

Now fold the bow in half “hot dog style”.  Fold back either side flap and squeeze together—see pictures to know what I’m talking about.

Now put a dab of hot glue onto the bow and start wrapping the leather “string” around the middle of the bow.  Wrap around 2-3 times.  When finished, tuck in the tail and cut off the excess.

I put the clip on one of three ways:  on the bow I just slid the top of the clip under the leather straps.  It clips on great to a headband or hair.  The leather keeps it from slipping.  You could also cut a small shape and a couple slits to work the top of the clip through (second picture below).  Or you can simply glue the top only of the clip and adhere it to your shape that way, like the heart at the bottom of the picture collage below.

Now cut out whatever shapes you want and have fun!  I used my accuquilt baby cutter for some of these, but you can easily trace any shape you want and get the same result. (I was given the accuquilt cutter for free a while back, but this is no longer a sponsored link.  I made THIS skirt using my accuquilt cutter and have really enjoyed having this fun machine!).

I made a bunch of different headbands to clip on my new hair accessories.  I love to buy my elastic HERE (not a sponsored link, I just like them).  They have some great prices.  DIY Leather Hair Accessories DIY Leather Hair Accessories DIY Leather Hair Accessories DIY Leather Hair Accessories  DIY Leather Hair Accessories

I think the heart and star are my favorite. She wore her new heart one to her latest cardiologist appointment and everyone loved it :).

Best part is, Ruby, Bailey, and I can all share them.  I’m loving leather so much these days!
