Planting Wheat Grass

03/08/2010 By Christie

I’m sure there are many, many people who know how to do this already and lots of places to find out how online, but I’m documenting it for myself so I remember next year:). If you plant now, you’ll have some great grass to decorate with for Easter or Spring! I learned this at an activity for my church this last week from a great gal, Jenny. So with permission from her to post her tips and how-to, here it is!
First, soak some wheat in water overnight (about 12 hours should be fine). I had two pots that measured about 6″ across, and used around 1/4 cup wheat kernels. Soaking the kernels speeds up the whole process.
Place some potting soil into your pot, leaving about an inch or so space from the top of the soil to the top of your pot. Spread out your soaked wheat kernels over the soil. You can see that you lay out a pretty thick layer.Spray kernels with water.

Now you can cover it with saran wrap if you want to speed up the process even more–sort of like a green house.

You can secure it with a rubber band, if desired. You don’t really need to do this, especially if you have a glass pot that the saran wrap sticks to. But if you are transporting it, then it might be a good idea :).

Just make sure to spray a couple times a day to keep it moist. Once they have started to grow a bit, you can remove the saran wrap, but still keep the soil moist.

The following picture is after just 48 hours of planting. So fast! And it will look great in my spring and Easter decorating!

After just 6 days.

I have one question… Did you use old wheat? So, could I open up my 12 year old wheat and would it still work like that? Just curious. I have always wanted to try growing wheat…maybe this is the year!!! Thanks a bunch for sharing.

Open up your old wheat and try – I would be surprised, tho, if the seed is still viable after 12 yrs!

How fun! Where do you get wheat at? A health food store?
