Project Sewn: Floral Frenzy Challenge

05/13/2014 By Christie

Project Sewn Floral Frenzy {a lemon squeezy home}For this week’s challenge I sewed a Lady Skater and a Burda Moto Jacket.  First let’s talk about the Skater.

 Lady Skater {a lemon squeezy home}Project Sewn Floral Frenzy {a lemon squeezy home}
I paired this pretty floral with some Ponte stripes that I salvaged from a pencil skirt I sewed before (and for the Project Sewn sew-along, no less!).  I could have bought new fabric for the bodice, but there was nothing I liked quite as well with the floral as the Ponte I already had used from THIS skirt.  The only problem was that I didn’t have enough of the fabric leftover to make the bodice, so I sacrificed the skirt to use for the dress :).  I’m happy I did!  I love these fabrics together!

I had to piece the sleeves to get enough fabric to use.  Thankfully it worked.

The neckline is finished with the same floral from the skirt.  I love how the Skater fits so perfectly!

I knew I wanted to pair floral with something a little edgy, so I bought the Burda Moto Jacket pattern, naively thinking it wouldn’t be as complicated as it looked.

It was complicated, and then some.  By the end of sewing this thing I was feeling like rather than me paying them for the pattern, they should pay me for sewing it, ha!  Just kidding…a little ;).

But seriously, this jacket was laborious.  There are 13 pattern pieces for the outer, and then you have 8 for the lining.  Oh my word this thing was difficult, mostly because you get one page of instructions.

I had read that Burda patterns were hard to understand, and boy were those people right.  But the designs—they are amazing!  So I don’t know that I’m going to be sewing any jackets this intense anytime in the near future, but I do love how amazing the design is.  Hard work but worth it.  Project Sewn Floral Frenzy {a lemon squeezy home}

I think that the hard work paid off.  I seriously love how this jacket turned out.

The seaming and detail on this thing is incredible!

And that’s what I came up with for the Floral Frenzy challenge!

Head HERE to vote for your favorite look!

And please excuse my awful hair style.  It has been so windy and rainy this last week and both times I attempted pictures it was raining and blowing like crazy.  I left the house looking much more polished ;).

And special thanks to my 10 year old son who took the pictures both this week and last :).  He’s got a knack for photography, I think!

Dress pattern:  Lady Skater

Jacket pattern:  Burda Moto #128

Floral Fabric:  Joann (like THIS but in knit spandex)

Striped Bodice Fabric:  Girl Charlee (no longer in stock but THIS is almost just like it)

Jacket fabric:  Black Stretch Denim from Joann (pretty lightweight—I wouldn’t use for jeans but it was perfect for a jacket)

    This jacket is so impressive, and looks great with the dress! Love the stripes combined with the floral, it gives it a little bit of an edge. Very nice.

    I love this entire outfit! Oh my gosh… That jacket is awesome! I know you said that it was complicated but it is so worth it! I love the dark floral too. Actually I made a dark floral and white biker jacket for the sewalong so I guess that’s why I like yours so much!! Great job! I immediately gave you my vote. Good luck!

    Ha ha ha “they should have paid you to sew the jacket”. Love that! It does look great though, well done. Loving those stripes too.

      Thank you:). I hesitated putting that on there but I’m pretty sure I thought that a good number of times by the last couple hours of sewing it! :)

    Christie, I am absolutely blown away by your look this week. That jacket is amazing and looks utterly professional! I can’t even imagine how much work you had to put into it, especially since it is a Burda pattern, but it is so, so impressive. And the Lady Skater! Gorgeous! I would never have thought to pair stripes and florals in the same piece, but it’s beyond chic. Amazing work!!

    I’m not that fond of the combination of the skirt and top. But I do love them separatly, especially the top !

      To each their own, right? :) Glad you like them separately!

    WOW! I love how you approached the challenge this week on Project Sewn! I have a hard time visualizing how to go about mixing prints, and the way you incorporated your skirt fabric into the neckline of the dress is brilliant! I think I could ease into print mixing by trying something similar. Thanks for the inspiration! You’ve got my vote! Also, your jacket is out-of-this-world good! I thought it was a purchased addition to your outfit.

    LOVE this outfit! Even with the warnings about how complicated the moto jacket is, I’m pretty temped to try it. What fabric did you use for yours? Did the right size (based on your measurements) fit right or did you have to tweak the fit? I find that a lot of the Burda patterns have way more ease that I need and it looks like this pattern would be really difficult to adjust the fit.

    Way to take on a challenge and show it who’s boss!!! I’ve totally had my eye on that jacket pattern, and plan on making it up so it’s really awesome to see it actually made, and to know what I’m getting into ahead of time! LOL Well done; you have my vote! :)

    I love this outfit so much! The stripes with floral is a brilliant combination for the dress – sad to say goodbye to your skirt, but I think it was worth it – I especially love the floral neckband contrast… and the jacket to set it all off is very impressive! I voted for your look on Project Sewn. Bon chance! :)
