Red and Turquoise Quilt + Mini Tutorial

HST Star Quilt Mini Tutorial // lemon squeezy home

This quilt I made for my sweet mother-in-law. She recently remodeled her main areas of her home and is accenting with red and turquoise.

I was on the fence whether or not I would be able to get this done in time for Christmas, but since my husband was working out of town I figured I could swing it. The local lady who did the quilting was amazing and even fit it into her busy schedule and I got the quilt from her on the Eve of Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve was busy so basically I was up for hours binding it, but I like binding and I watched some reeeeeeaaallllly cheesey Netflix Christmas movies.

The lady who quilted it did a perfect pattern–it’s very simlar to the shapes on the red and white, almost exactly. I thought it was more like the one on the red and turquoise but it’s really almost exact to the red and white pattern. It’s perfect! And she chose a minty green which worked out amazingly well with the high contrast colors of the quilt. red and turquoise quilt // lemon squeezy home

My inspiration was THIS quilt. There is no pattern so I’ll tell you what I did at the end of the post to make this quilt, in case you are interested.

I really love how this turned out. And with half square triangles it makes for a fairly quick quilt top to finish. Especially compared with the quilt I posted about yesterday!

Ok, the quick HOW TO:

-Cut 24 10″ squares of white (you’ll need 60″ + what you need for the sashing)

-Cut 9 10″ squares of dark solid red (you’ll need 30″)

-Choose four other fabrics for the remaining 15 squares, so 10″ of each and cut 15 total 10″ squares out of the four other fabrics chosen (but you will want to make one of those the binding and one the backing).

-Backing: about 5 yards

-Binding: 5/8 of a yard (plus 10″ because it’s one of the four other fabrics mentioned above).

-73″ x 4.5″ side sashing (cut two–add this measurement to the white you need for the 24 squares and the top and bottom sashing)

-56″ x 4.5″ for top and bottom sashing (cut two)

*Finished quilt measured about 81″ x 56″. *

You’ll want to follow THIS method to sew the 24 white squares with the 24 red or other colored squares.

Cut them diagonal twice as the tutorial shows in that link. Iron and clip off extra “tags”.

Arrange them as you see this quilt arranged. It can be a little tricky but you’ll get the hang of it! Then just sew the squares together to make long strips, iron, and sew the strips together.

When sewing the sashing, make sure you meausure your quilt in two or three places and then average that out to get your length! Then pin, starting in the middle of both the quilt and the sashing and pin the whole length. If you don’t do this, you will be disappointed to find that your sashing is wavy. DO NOT just sew a long strip on and cut off the excess. Your quilt will not be even on each side and the top will not lay flat. Trust me, I learned the hard way on THESE quilts.  I had to unpick and do some research to figure out what I was doing wrong.

My favorite binding tutorial is HERE. I cut my binding at 2.5″ wide.

I hope that helps anyone who is interested in knowing how to make this. Let me know if you have questions on anything and I’ll do my best to help (apart from figuring out the white fabric yardage with the 24 10″ squares + sashing–please don’t ask me to do anymore math on this quilt, ha!). I would love to try this same quilt using 14″ squares to start with! It would be a HUGE quilt!

Thanks for reading!

Awesome. Was just going to ask for ideas how to make this larger house when I read Tammy chabot’s comment of making with 14” squares. Love the idea of that seeming to work out. Sure hope I figure out the dynamics. Any words of wisdom Tammy? Beautiful quilt and love the red and turquoise – such a bright and happy vibrant quilt !!! 😍

I love red and white quilts but have never made one in fear that it will bleed. What advice do you have? I love the everything about the quilt. Hats off!

Just for sure use a color catcher (or 2-3) when washing. Hope it works!

The hst squares? If you are talking about what size the hst squares end up after sewing two 10″ pieces together around the edges and then cutting diagonal, then the squares made of two triangles end up about 6.72″, so you can square them up to 6.5″ or 6″. I don’t really square mine up if it’s a quilt for myself, but to be perfect, that’s the best way to do so.

Hi I made one for the local senior neighborhood quilt program using 18″ blocks and have another one ready to sew using 10″ blocks.

Love this quilt and am finishing one in shades of pink with a blue paisley for contrast. When duplicating the layout, I found that I needed 8 dark red squares and 16 from the assorted other fabrics. Did I get something wrong?

Hello, Any chance you can tell me the name of the red and turquoise print fabric? Or have you seen one lately you can recommend? Thanks!
