Sew in Tune: ROAR

02/15/2015 By Christie 17 Comments

ROAR // lemon squeezy home

Today I am thrilled to be a part of Sew in Tune that the lovely ladies Stacey of Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy Crafts and Design, and Melissa of Melly Sews put on. I really admire both of these girls and have really appreciated their friendship the past year or so as I’ve gotten to know them better. Such talent. Plus I’ve always loved this series and was pretty excited when they asked me if I would join this year.

Bailey LOVES the song Roar. It is her absolute favorite and while I may not be a huge Katy Perry fan myself, and I may have had some other first choices, it is a fun song to sing at the top of your lungs. The song kind of fits Bailey to a T. She has two older brothers so perhaps that is why? So we ran with the idea.

Let’s break down the outfit. First, I wanted to make a dress that was still little girl appropriate, so I chose one of Shwin and Shwin’s great free patterns, her Modern Baby Doll top. I was relieved once I found her tutorial and so happy it was free (so kind of her), because it was just what I was looking for. A bit of edginess with the leather, and the exposed zipper–everything I wanted for this look.

The leather was cut out from a jacket that I thrifted. I love that detail on the pattern! I almost chose black but decided that made it a bit too harsh for a little girl. Yes, the song is quite empowering to girls and women, which I do like about it, however Bailey is only 6 and I feel she needs to dress her age ;).  Painting Roar on was my most favorite part of the whole outfit.  I practiced on some paper first and then of course it didn’t turn out anything like what I had practiced, but for once maybe better?  Anyways, I love it.  I just watered down some fabric paint and hoped for the best.  Notice I hoped for the best BEFORE assembling the bodice.

The exposed zipper is another favorite of the pattern. I did it a little different than the pattern suggests, but either way looks great. I of course had to go with the tiger print.

The leggings were made using some Girl Charlee fabric from the Knit Fix that I did a while back.  Incidentally the post uses the same fabric.  I wanted to add a more feminine touch to the somewhat masculine outfit.  I used the Go To Leggings pattern and I can’t say enough great things about how easy and quick the leggings always come together.

This girl, I just love her.  She goes from sweet as can be to Miss Sassy pants in a matter of seconds.

See what I mean? She’s pretty rad. The pictures kind of remind me of that awesome Like a Girl campaign that has been going around for a while. Which also always makes me cry. Because Bailey has that confidence and loves herself!  Just what we want and just what we hope will last through the toughest years.

In the pictures I kept asking her to show me how tough girls are, etc and so this is what she did.  I think it is so important to embrace exactly who each person is. And for Bailey, she is full of life, full of enthusiasm, she can be sweet as a button and then tough as nails. She keeps up with the boys and sometimes surpasses the boys.  But to me it’s not about the competition between her and boys, or her and other girls.  It’s only about her being her.  And loving herself because she’s being true to herself.

The hat was made using my Faux Fur Hood pattern.  It’s such a quick sew and my kids love each one that is cranked out.  Bailey could not wait to get her tiger hat!  It’s pretty cute.  I made the size Small for her this time and it fits her nicely.  The fur is so soft and I used just a fleece on the inside and it worked well. ROAR // lemon squeezy home

The only thing I did differently was topstitch around the edge of the hat once finished.  I think I like the detail of doing this, but it looks great without it also.  The ears I think I may have preferred to be just a touch smaller.  I folded them partially down and stitched them just a few little stitches, so that they looked like the tiger ears I saw online in a few spots.  ROAR // lemon squeezy home

I think it’s safe to say she loves the outfit.

I love this! You can see Bailey’s fun spirit. Those hand painted letters are awesome! I have to admit the Like a Girl commercials always get me too one day I watched it and then I watched my daughter chase after her older brother and I was so impressed by the strength of a little girl running.

I made a fur hat for my daughter’s Halloween outfit and I just loved it and so did she. Am I able to make these and sell them? And when I say sell I really mean try and sell. It’s a new thing for me. Of course I would give total credit to you for the pattern. I would never be able to make something like that.
    Thanks
