For this last decade, I knew I wanted to incorporate things that are all the rage right now—ruffles, polka dots, flower headbands, cute tights…you get the idea.
What I didn’t realize was that once I put all the items together, it looked pretty 50’s! Which is ok because I LOVE the 50’s and it is very much in style these days.
OK,let’s break down the look for you.
The skirt: I made the skirt using a tutorial by Dana of MADE for her circle skirt. I again borrowed Sabra’s serger and it made the whole process go faster. I’m happy with how it turned out. I might have to do some unpicking though, since I measured the elastic around my waist with clothes on…oops. So it’s safety pinned in the back—it might also have to do with how high I wanted to wear it on my waist with this shirt.
The top: I started with a Shade basic tee top, cut the neckline a bit lower, and used a tutorial for this ruffled shirt by Sachiko of Tea Rose Home. Sure, my ruffles aren’t evenly spaced, but I still love it and will wear it.
The tights: I just bought those classy fish-net looking tights at Wally-World for $5.00. They are cuter in real life.
The headband: I wanted to make a ruffled lace headband, and I wanted it big. SO many tutorials on how to make these kinds of things, so I didn’t bother. .

The shoes: they are just my shoes that I added the removable ruffles to.
Thank you Sabra, for taking the pictures—it’s so nice to have someone I feel a teeny tiny less self conscious around!
On a different subject: Does anyone else get all dressed up and excited for pics, only to find that you are so camera shy that you feel like an idiot!?
I appear to be trying a ballet move while sitting.
Kissy lips directed at…my feet?
I will be doing a re-cap next week of all my projects from the Sew Through the Decades Challenge! It feels so good to have accomplished it! And it feels even better to be finished:).
SO CUTE! I have been toying with the idea of making a circle skirt for myself, but I’m preggers so it might have to be kind of an oval skirt :-)
adorable !!!
I am in love with it all- the flowers, the ruffles and the polka dots. It is very 50s- but I agree with you that it is a great look!
Super cute! I love it all! I actually made something just yesterday for this decade, I’ll do pictures this week and get them to you! Nothing fancy, just something I wanted to make.
you are beautiful, Christie. This outfit is great. I would totally borrow it except your waist is half the size of mine and it would be ankle length on me. Maybe I’ll have to make my own.
Super cute! I love your ‘now’ outfit!
Great outfit! I so admire your willingness to sew clothing for yourself. It’s been a really fun challenge! I hope to have my project finished tomorrow…
LOVE IT!!! I wondered if you were headed somewhere for pictures yesterday when we passed by in our cars. The lipstick gave you away :) Love the outfit, you look fabulous! My FAVE picture of you is 5th up from the bottom of the post: GORGEOUS , it’s a framer, you should give it to Dillon as a gift :)
You are adorable. I found you through Dana in fact. Isn’t she the greatest? I just made a circle skirt and I love it! I won’t post about it until after Halloween though. I love love your shirt and the polka dot material you got. Those tights look super super cute. I just think you are wonderful. I love that you did craft week with your kids and really tried to keep it kid friendly…that is hard!
I am a pretty new reader to your blog so I love that you link back to old projects. And..this is getting really long but I love, love, love the sewing through the decades challenge. I didn’t participate but I spent a good hour reading all the historical posts and sewing posts on it. I think you are tremendous. :)
I love this outfit. The skirt looks so swirly, soft and feminine. Very pretty!
Love it! I think you hit 2000 right on the head.
Just Better Together
Gorgeous photoshoot!
You look sutnning Christie!! I love your skirt and your ruffle shirt turned out so cute! (Thank you for the link back by the way…). You are one stylish girl!
So cute! I love it all. Good job on making an entire outfit too, including accessories! I know what you mean about taking photos of yourself, I feel so self-indulgent and it’s so hard for me to not crop my face out of the picture every time :).
You’re right, it does look 50’s! I love the whole thing, esp. the headband. I hope this fashion moment lasts a little longer, I like it.
You are so GORGEOUS!! I love your blog and your children are adorable. Thanks so much for blogging!
