My kids were asking when the next shipment of Mo Mail would be coming, and were thrilled to discover that the box came that day! We were not disappointed. Once again we are sponsored by Disney-Hyperion for the #ReadMo Ambassador program! This time we got to read the newest book by Mo Willems called Sam, the Most Scaredy-cat Kid in the Whole World, a companion book to Leonardo, the Terrible Monster. We love these books! ALL of my kids love these books, from age 4 up to age 14. Like I said in a previous post, we really are huge Mo Willems fans.
At first my girls did not love the fun Leonardo puppet that came in the shipment because they were scared of him, but after one reading of the books, they changed their minds and all love him. What a cute character.
Leonardo is truly a terrible monster-terrible at being a monster that is. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t seem to frighten anyone. Determined to succeed, Leonardo sets himself to training and research. Finally, he finds a nervous little boy, and scares the tuna salad out of him! But scaring people isn’t quite as satisfying as he thought it would be. Leonardo realizes that he might be a terrible, awful monster-but he could be a really good friend.
In Sam, the Most Scaredy-cat Kid in the Whole World, we learn that Sam is afraid of anything and everything—except for his friend Leonardo, the terrible monster. Kerry is afraid of everything and anything—except for her friend Frankenthaler, the other monster. One day, the two scaredy-cat kids make a particularly scary discovery: each other!
You’ll have to read what happens next, but I absolutely love the messages shared in each book. I wanted to base my post today on the fears our children may have. After reading the books, we were able to have some discussions together about what they are afraid of. Then I went to the internet to read about the best ways to help our children deal with their fears. One thing most articles mentioned was that we can help them laugh! Not make fun of their fears or dismiss them by any means, but help them feel happy when they are feeling sad, nervous, or scared. I decided a Mad Lib would be perfect. Not only to make them giggle, but to help open up the conversation for them to feel comfortable to discuss their fears. First fold the paper in half so the words are on the outside. Have them fill out the “answer” side first, then either read it with the matching number or transfer the answers over onto the main mad lib part.
We had so much fun reading them! I helped my four year old fill hers out. Even my 14 year old wanted to join us. We all read them and they were super funny. I was nervous to make my first mad lib and was pleased my kiddos enjoyed it so much.
Note to parents: you can have your kids name something they are truly afraid of in real life in place of the noun for #4. It’s funny to have them do it either way. I opted to let them just choose a noun and it was pretty funny as well.
Here were my four year old’s responses. They were all so fun.
But the best part was watching them while they read and listened. Such funny kids.
