Etched Glass Vases

06/08/2011 By Christie

I made these vases for Mother’s Day this year and wanted to share them with you.  DSC_0034-1

They don’t sell the etching cream in Joann stores (I believe they do online, however) so I went to Michael’s.  It isn’t cheap, but with a coupon it was affordable. DSC_0028-1

You are supposed to put a thick layer of the cream onto the glass, which is fine but you’ll end up using most of a small bottle on a just a few projects.  I read that you can scrape it off with your paintbrush and put it back in the bottle so you can re-use it again, so I did that and have so far etched 5 vases and still have lots of etching cream left. I used my silhouette machine to cut the vinyl to etch, then cut out the same shape in the cards I gave with them.  You could totally cut your own shapes in the vinyl, or use a paper punch for flowers or other cool punches that would make a great shape on your glass.DSC_0032-1DSC_0026-1

I used THIS idea from Lorajean’s blog for the crepe paper.  Dana on MADE also uses this idea HERE.  I love ruffling crepe paper!  It’s so quick and adds such a nice touch to a present!  I’ve had many nice comments on them when I wrap it around a white box.  (And also a comment from my Uncle, “Is that a garter?”)

We’re finally enjoying some warmer weather in Utah!   Summer has officially arrived!  Well, maybe not.  The forecast for Thursday is 63 degrees.  Maybe not so much summer yet.

Did you read yesterday’s post about making a pillowcase to donate to a children’s hospital?  Such a great idea!  Be sure to let Carlee know if you can donate a pillowcase!  They are so easy to whip up in less than half an hour! With two of my children having major surgeries performed at this particular hospital, I hold a soft spot in my heart for the good that goes on there.  I know a bright, cheery pillowcase would bring a smile to a child who is being treated there!

Oh, I love doing glass etching with my Cricut, but I’ve never saved the cream. I might start doing that. I have three little half-full bottles floating around and one large one…
