First, let’s just start by saying this is one beautiful jacket. The details are amazing.
There is a lot of topstitching throughout the pattern. The hood, the visor, the sleeve seams, the hood seams, the pockets—pretty much anything that can be topstitched, is. It goes fairly quickly and there isn’t anything that is too tricky to do this on. It does take some time of course to do all of the topstitching called for. I thought about skipping some of it but then figured it gives it a wonderfully polished look and so stuck to it.
Carson is tall tall tall for age 10, and so I sewed up the size 12 and it is just right for him—maybe a touch too big which is how I prefer to sew things anyway. And how great is it that it goes up to size 12?! I love pattern makers who think of us with older children. Plenty of time to get a lot of use from it. Carson thinks this jacket is the bomb. He was so stoked the whole time I was sewing it, offering to help watch Ruby and do whatever I asked of him. He is getting to an age where he doesn’t want to wear what I make him anymore, but he said he was going to wear this to school tomorrow and told me “thank you” about 15 times during and after pictures. Which, coming from this kid, is saying a lot.
He especially loves the hood visor and pockets.
I did get the wrong size zipper—so when you sew it yourself don’t make my mistake and buy one too short! It was supposed to be 24” but I bought 22”. I don’t think it looks awful. It’s just a bit short.
I was really close to buying THIS fabric, but once I saw Alida’s version of this jacket HERE made from a shower curtain (I know, so cool!), I thought I would search out some shower curtains myself. I found THIS one and knew my boys would love it. I also knew my husband would approve of it since he’s a hunter and loves camouflage. I was right because my husband totally said something about the fabric and once Carson tried it on even mentioned once again how good the jacket looked. Which, while my husband is supportive of my sewing hobby, is a big deal for him to say ;).
Yep, I love this jacket.
And so does the wearer.
Don’t expect this to be a quick sew. I consider myself to be an intermediate sewer. This still took me at least 4 hours from start to finish, possibly longer. But if you are a beginner, don’t let the time frame scare you. Heidi is so thorough in her pattern details and instructions that you are sure to succeed! The results are worth it. I will make my other two kids one as well after Project Sewn is over. The final product is just too great not to!

Awesome fabric! Love the birch bark. I cannot believe the fabric came from a shower curtain!!! I will have to remember that idea.

That is a COOL jacket!! It’s no wonder he loves it! :) I love that this pattern works so well for both boys and girls. I feel like my boy gets a lot less sewing done for him than my girl :)

Thanks so much Heidi! It is a great pattern and so fun it works for boys as there seems to be a lack of cool boy patterns :). I definitely sew more for my girls because it tends to be quicker, but I guess I just need to try the easier shirt patterns for boys. If only they would be more excited–that would motivate me also!
